How to edit vertical video online for Shorts, Reels and TikTok
Vertical video is not simply landscape footage turned sideways. A good 9:16 edit keeps the subject readable on a small screen, leaves room for platform controls and earns attention before a viewer swipes away.
Start with the delivery frame
Create the project at 1080 × 1920 pixels and 30 frames per second unless the source or platform requires something else. Deciding the frame first prevents titles, captions and picture-in-picture layers from being positioned against the wrong canvas.
When a landscape clip enters a vertical frame, choose deliberately between containing the whole image and cropping into the action. Containing preserves every pixel but creates empty space. Cropping feels native to the feed but needs a clear focal point.

Cut for comprehension, not only speed

Use B-roll or a second visual layer when it explains the spoken point. Decorative motion that competes with the message makes a short video feel slower, even when the cuts are fast.
Design captions as part of the composition
Captions improve accessibility and help when a feed starts muted. Break speech into readable phrases rather than placing a full paragraph on screen. Strong contrast, a restrained outline and consistent placement matter more than an elaborate preset.
Word highlighting can guide attention, but it should not flash faster than the viewer can read. Review timing around names, numbers and technical terms because automatic transcription is most likely to need correction there.
Export and verify
A standard H.264 MP4 is the safest delivery format for the major short-video platforms. Watch the exported file from beginning to end, listen for clipped audio and inspect the first and final frame. The preview and final encode use different rendering paths, so the exported file is the final authority.
